Mama + Babe: Playing Dress Up

June 29, 2013

These images of Bianca Balti and her daughter Matilde clad in Dolce & Gabbana are pretty fantastical, but they're still lovely depictions of a beloved pastime.

Arugula Pesto

June 15, 2013

I love good 'ol basil pesto but I'm also all for experimenting with different ingredients, especially when it involves some of our favorite staples. This arugula pesto has become my new go-to version. It's incredible spread on this caprese grilled cheese. A couple of slices of avocado really takes this sandwich over the top. Seriously, it's beyond delicious.

Check out this pea pesto recipe I shared a while back.

The Spirit of the Fox

January 7, 2013

My new year began with a dream where I found myself crossing paths with a friendly fox. It turns out, spirit animals typically show themselves to you in unexpected ways. Foxes have always captured my attention, but not quite like the one featured in the artwork of T.C. Cannon, an artist I came across serendipitously over the weekend. Do you know your spirit animal?

you're invited: madewell style sessions

May 14, 2012

There are a lot of things Madewell does really well. They make great jeans. They capture pattern, texture and detail in a really cool way. And they've got a great eye for finding under-the-radar brands. But what I love most is their knack for pulling it all together in a seriously stylish yet laid-back way. Which is why I'm excited to be a part of the Madewell Style Sessions happening this Thursday at the Garden State Plaza store. Come on down to sip and shop with some cool tunes, special deals and lots of summer style tips. RSVP here. Hope to see you there.

Being Present in Motherhood

May 13, 2012

In honor of the amazing experiences motherhood brings, here are some words of wisdom from yogi-mamas on how yoga has helped them be better mothers. They're all great reminders to be present for all of the wonderful moments with your little ones. Happy Mother's Day!

"Yoga has taught me how to take one more moment to attune myself to my son. When I remember to do this, we both experience a profound connection to each other and to ourselves." Elena Brower

"Because of my practice I know that I won't get any moments of this life back and that makes every moment a precious jewel that I keep close and sacred. My drishti is on my boys, like a laser. And that beam of consciousness, like all drishtis lights the way." Stephanie Snyder

"Yoga grounds me and has helped me learn to stay in the present moment, appreciating the miracles that lie before me. I know that the virtues of patience peace and calm are benefits of my yoga practice that I weave into my everyday life as a parent." Latham Thomas

"Yoga teaches us to trust ourselves, to strengthen in some places, and to soften, heal and open in others, to see ourselves clearly, to know ourselves deeply, and to uncover what is true for us. Over the last 20 years, it has taught me to treat myself with compassion, kindness and patience, to be less reactive and more responsive, to listen well, to breathe deeply, and to tap into that limitless well of love and joy we all possess naturally. I feel I'm able to offer those qualities to my children as a result, and to recognize that these two little beings are the greatest miracles in my life. There is no doubt in my mind that I'm a better mom because of yoga." Ally Hamilton

a haiku for feist

May 9, 2012

Feist’s concert at Radio City this past weekend was mind-blowing. There are few words to describe how magical her voice is, so I decided to write a haiku.

your sensual voice
hauntingly mesmerizing
echoes in my soul.

Spring Style

April 20, 2012

I love shopping for my little guy. Especially now that he's very vocal about what he wants to wear. And we've been in full on shopping mode for the last week as we prepare for our upcoming vacation.
I'm digging the easy silhouettes and fresh colors in the spring collections. The options for boys are getting much better. And even though the warm weather makes me nostalgic for onesies and rompers, I'm enjoying dressing my baby like a little dude.

urban gardens

All I want is a beautiful urban garden of my own. And to be a landscape designer. Which is making me want to watch The Kids Are Alright again.

It's the Brooklyn Way

April 13, 2012

It's a Brooklyn kind of weekend. Habana Outpost  is hosting their opening day and annual Earth Day Expo on Saturday. I love to head over to indulge on their corn and frozen mojitos, but they also know how to show kids a good time so Jules always has a blast. This year kids can enjoy recycled arts and crafts and a planting workshop. A host of vendors will also be on hand to share tips and resources on sustainable living.

Then make your way up 5th for some wine tasting, food samples, a local marketplace and more eco workshops for the Escapemaker Local Food and Travel Expo (kids 10 and under are free).

And the awesome Elizabeth Mitchell and You are my Flower will be performing a free show at the Brooklyn Public Library at 1pm.  They're awesome live!

Surely Carine Roitfeld's new magazine, CR, will be quite the visual experience and truly global as contributors will encouraged to write in their native language.

hidden pond

April 11, 2012

The Hidden Pond in Kennebunkport, Maine seems like the kind of place you'll never want to leave. Close to the southern coast of Maine and surrounded by sixty acres of birch groves and balsam fir, it's an oasis in the woods. Guests enjoy uniquely decorated private cottages, food sourced from two on-site organic gardens, treehouse-like spa treatment rooms stocked with natural oils from Farmaesthetics and plenty of cozy nooks across the property to unwind and relax. As if that wasn't enough, guests are also encouraged to pick flowers from the farm and arrange a vase in the on-site potting shed, or seek artistic inspiration from the artist in residence. There's yoga, tai chi and stretching sessions with a personal trainer. And nightly bonfires set the tone for evenings on the property. Sounds like the perfect weekend (more like week long!) getaway.

girls and dreams

April 5, 2012

There's something really soothing about Matt Schwartz's whimsical polaroids of girls, surf culture and nature shot in beautiful locations such at  Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Peru and California (among others, and even including good ol' New Jersey). The dreamy, vintage feel is the result of a Polaroid transfer onto watercolor paper. I'm really drawn in by the way he captures the vulnerability of the moment. Some of his prints are on sale here; more from his portfolio here.
